On Tuesday, Meta introduced Muse, a personal AI agent designed to handle everyday tasks and projects for users in the U.S. According to reporting from TechCrunch, Muse represents a shift away from the ChatGPT era of chatbots and digital companions toward AI that can actually execute actions. The agent is capable of sending emails, booking travel, filling out forms, and turning recipe reels into grocery lists. It can even help a user sell a car, as reported by Wired.

To achieve this level of utility, Muse requires a degree of trust and data access that far exceeds previous social media requirements. The agent connects to a user's everyday workflows, including email, calendars, payments, and apps for health and fitness, shopping, dining, music, and smart home management. While Meta allows users to opt-in to these services one by one to create a veneer of transparency, the core value proposition relies on the agent's ability to learn from conversations to make unprompted suggestions over time, as TechCrunch reports.

Meta is positioning Muse as a secure alternative to other AI agents like Instinct or OpenClaw. David Singleton, who serves as the vice president of engineering for consumer products at Meta Superintelligence Lab, told Wired the system was created with a deliberate focus on responsibility. The agent runs in a "Secure VM" (virtual machine) intended to isolate user activity and keep untrusted web data separate from the agent's actions. A separate "Sentinel" agent monitors data leaving the VM to ensure it matches user permissions or triggers a human-in-the-loop approval process to prevent prompt injection attacks, according to Wired.

For financial transactions, Muse leverages Link by Stripe, which Wired reports issues single-use card numbers to avoid exposing a user's actual financial information. TechCrunch notes that Link provides purchase protections, which Meta hopes will alleviate fears regarding AI-driven checkouts. Integration with 1Password and Shopify’s Shop Pay is also expected soon.

However, the technical architecture does not erase the company's track record. TechCrunch highlights a history of systemic failures: a 2011 FTC settlement over deceiving users about private information, a record-breaking $5 billion FTC penalty in 2019 for eight privacy violations, and a 2023 FTC charge for violating a subsequent privacy order. Furthermore, the company has faced technical lapses, such as the 2019 discovery of passwords stored in readable formats and the massive Cambridge Analytica scandal, where millions of users' data was collected without consent.

Even the current "Secure VM" is not a total fortress. Singleton conceded to Wired that despite policies barring Meta from accessing Muse data, the company retains the technical capacity to do so. Meta is attempting to address this by developing a "Confidential VM" in collaboration with Moxie Marlinspike—the creator of Signal and the AI platform Confer. This proposed system would use a "trusted execution environment" where users manage access keys locally, meaning neither Meta nor any other party could access the VM, according to Wired.

Despite these promises, the cost of entry is high. Muse is available via the web at muse.ai, through iOS and Android apps, and within WhatsApp, with future integration planned for Meta’s AI glasses. While a free tier exists, Meta requires a payment card to get started. For those who want more automation, Meta is offering two paid tiers: Power at $20/month and Maximum at $100/month, as reported by TechCrunch.

As Meta pushes Muse into the mainstream, the danger remains that the "convenience" of an AI agent will act as a Trojan horse for deeper data harvesting. While the company offers a public bug bounty with payouts up to $300,000 for vulnerability findings—including $130,000 for prompt injection attacks—as reported by Wired, no amount of bounty hunting can undo a decade of eroded trust.
